One of the questions I receive most often from retirement fund members is about who has a claim to their retirement funds if they die in service.
This video, as part of a member education series for the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), explains who is entitled to what, which important documents you need to keep up to date (like your your beneficiary nomination form), as well as how your legal and financial dependants are defined.

Hi Maya
My mother works for the government, is about to retire with more than 10 years dervice . She wants to nominate my sister( adult unemployed) and myself (adult employed) as beneficiaries for her gratuity payment and leave spouse on annuity pension because they are still married in community of property. This is mainly because of their strained relationship and the spouse’s attitude of just waiting and wishing her to die as she is fighting a terminal disease. She regularly helps us financially and transfers money into our bank accounts because of the grandchildren. We are both married with children. In this case how would the trustees look at this case?
